A word from our Musical Director...

The St Matthew Passion is rarely performed due to the high number of musicians required: Bach calls for a double choir and a double orchestra together with a children’s choir and seven soloists making this possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity for many of us to perform this great work!

We have a wonderful line-up of soloists who will be accompanied by The London Baroque Sinfonia who are some of the best period instrumentalists in the country, and we will be joining forces with Kingsgate Voices and the Winchester Cathedral Girls Choir.

The project was conceived by Andy Hayman, Jamal Sutton and Winchester-based Jon Newman, who is a life-long Bach enthusiast and is increasingly well-known for his very high-quality concerts featuring his chamber choir: Bach Winchester Voices showcasing not only Bach’s glorious choral music but also providing a platform for very talented young musicians on the threshold of their careers.

Southern Voices is delighted to be both singing and working in partnership with Kingsgate Voices on this project which will showcase new talent: Sebastian Hill, Ben Hendry-Watkins and Maurice Cole together with established soloists: Katharine Fuge, Malachy Frame, Jessica Gillingwater and Gareth Brynmor John.

The concert will be performed at Romsey Abbey on Saturday 21 March 2026 (NB: concert starts at 6.30pm) and is a very special opportunity to hear this great Easter masterpiece.
