Joining Southern Voices

All eyes on the conductorSouthern Voices has around 35 members. Although all of us are amateurs and many have challenging day jobs, singing is very much part of our lives and some of us sing in other choirs as well. We are always keen to hear from potential new members who are strong sight-readers.

Currently, we have vacancies for an alto, a tenor and a bass. If you are interested in joining Southern Voices, please drop us a line and our Membership Secretary will contact you to arrange an audition.

New members are selected by the musical director, after an audition at a mutually convenient time. It is helpful if you can prepare a song to your own taste, or even a well-known hymn which demonstrates your voice's pitch, timbre and range. You will be asked to do some sight-reading capability and be given ear tests.  Auditions may take place at the beginning or end of a rehearsal, in which case the auditionee(s) will be invited to join in half  the rehearsal

We normally perform four concerts a year, typically including a Christmas concert in the Chapel of St Cross and a Passiontide concert in another local church, such as St Paul's in Winchester or St John's in Alresford.  We rehearse on Monday evenings from 7:30pm to 9:30pm in St Paul's Church (naar Winchester railway station). We also have occasional Saturday afternoon rehearsals, a maximum of one per concert. We do not normally rehearse during school holidays or at half term.

Each individual voice counts, so full commitment to attendance at rehearsals is of the utmost importance.

Southern Voices is self-governing and has an active committee.

Annual subscriptions cover the cost of rehearsal venue, conductor fees and running expenses. Subscriptions are currently set at £180, which can be paid in three instalments by DIrect Debit.

We aim to cover the cost of concerts from ticket sales,  fund raising, donations and fund raising.
