A word from our Musical Director...

The St Matthew Passion is rarely performed due to the high number of musicians required: Bach calls for a double choir and a double orchestra together with a children’s choir and seven soloists! The London Baroque Sinfonia will provide accompaniment on period instruments, providing an authentic sound and taking the concert to another level, while enhancing the performance as the drama unfolds telling the story of the final days leading up to Christ’s crucifixion.

The driving force behind the project is Winchester based Jon Newman. A life-long Bach enthusiast, Jon has formed Bach Winchester Voices and is increasingly well-known for putting on very high-quality concerts in the Winchester area showcasing not only Bach’s glorious choral music working with established soloists, but also providing a platform for very talented young musicians on the threshold of their careers, and accompanied by some of the best professional period instrumentalists in the country.

This performance ticks all of these boxes and will showcase: Sebastian Hill, Ben Hendry-Watkins and Maurice Cole together with more established names: Katharine Fuge, Malachy Frame, Jessica Gillingwater and Gareth Brynmor John.

The concert will be performed at Romsey Abbey on Saturday 21 March 2026 (NB: concert starts at 6.30pm) and is a very special opportunity to hear this great Easter masterpiece.
